A short bio

My latest at The Morning News is A writer by any other name:

Well, it’s accurate, you can give it that. But there’s not much spark, is there? Not much of me. Where’s the humor? Where’s the person? Where, in particular, is the biography? These two sentences are just statements of fact, things my mother could tell you—but also things anyone who’s vaguely heard of me could tell you. We need some added value, here, something that lives. Some biology for the biography.

Someone asked me why I bother sending stuff to the News, given that they don’t have the funds to pay for contributions. It’s cos I’d much rather a half-decent piece of writing appeared there than here. Creating something I consider worth submitting to the TNM team forces me to think about it a little more; more than I’d think about anything that gets posted here. There’s an element of built-in quality control.

Also, I’ve come to think of weblog content as disposable and ephemeral. My best bits of writing deserve a more promising, more reliable future.
