Word, on the PC, lets you have the wordcount displayed on screen, but makes you press a little button to update it. Surely that would have been easy to automate. When I attempted NaNoWriMo a couple of years back, I used it a lot :-)

It's amazing how rare live word count is. You'd think it'd be a default feature for every text editing/word processing app, yet as far as I know, WriteRoom is the only one on the Mac that implements it well, and most of the rest don't bother at all.

I think it's more common these days for a couple to find that between them, they already own all the necessities of life before they get round to getting married. So wedding lists have to be more creative. Much of the rest of this list was comprised of garden centre vouchers.

You're dead right about the charitable donations, though.

This strikes me as pretty sad actually. The whole point of a list is to help people who probably haven't much money to set up home with essentials. If you have plenty of money and everything you need, perhaps you should ask for charitable donations instead. Maybe I'm just bitter, I didn't even have a list, and ended up with three useless carriage clocks :)

Just thinking about this, hidden in a box of 'tech junk' were 2 Psion 5mxs that I'd forgotten about. One oof them came to life with new batteries (I think I'd given up on one of them as it kept losing data). I'm going off on a train trip to Munich and ooh I thought, that would be nice to take. I'll let you know if it was as lovely as I remember and if I can someone get it to post emails to my blog via my phone again.

Quick look through your blog and the slides you'd put together... suspect you might have some useful feedback on our forthcoming Market IQ on Findability. Feel free to weigh in on the topics we're going to cover within the umbrella of Findability - see http://www.biztechtalk.com/2008/04/put-on-your-fin.html

Cheers,

Strange - I've run into Keynote bugs, but not the reboot bug. Have been using Keynote since it first became available.

There does seem to be a memory leak bug - also identified and known for months, yet not fixed. Try having some looping videos playing as backgrounds, and at some point, POOF, Keynote will likely blow up. Won't reboot the entire machine, but still, not good.

Well, it's still an interesting observation. If you had to agree every time you installed any app, maybe you'd think more about it. Software authors might be encouraged to declare exactly what they're going to do. Another part of that dialog box, code signing, is certainly coming to the Mac OS X (it's already enabled, but not enforced, in 10.5). Maybe the desktop-integration web apps are actually leading the way?

Yeah, I found myself thinking the same thing shortly after posting this. I'm just being overly paranoid, I suppose.

If that was a standard desktop app, and not built with Adobe AIR, installing it would give it unrestricted system access, but you wouldn't get a warning about it. Yet you've probably dragged apps from DMGs and run them without thinking too hard about it - I certainly do. Hmmm.
