Matching games are great for kids. Try FlipFrog (http://tinyurl.com/ce3ano) it's a fun little memory game where you match different frogs using colours and sounds.

Actually, it IS a built-in function, the noyl thing you msut do is to write the commands. It depends on you if you want to develop a modification, and you can find some from userstyles.org (the Styler addon for Firefox, Thunderbird, Flock, SeaMonkey, Mozilla Suite, and Songbird)but I don't know if there's any just for viewing unread messages. The addon modifies CSS code of the sites, for example Gmail, and you can add or remove content what you do or do not want - now to view unread messages, you add a bit more code to the CSS and save it.

I recommend you to check it out, even if I don't use it anymore 'cause I use Google Chrome as my main browser nowadays.

Butbut, Gmail has many not-yet-found features - and we have to find them.

agree. I've used clunky intranet client software for my email, but even that enabled me to bring unread messages to the fore so i could go through them quickly. When is gmail going to have a visible built-in function like that? (i know that at gmail notifier allows you to see all unread msgs, but still!)

Nice! :)
But now you could map this feature to main screen:
Enable "Quick links". You can do by go into "Settings" and select "Labs" page.
Then search for unread messages and press "Add Quick Link" in "Quick Links" part of navigation bar.
Btw, there another useful Lab item: "Navbar drag and drop" - it help you to rearrange navigation bar as you like.
